מחלה זיהומית חיידקית מדבקת, הנגרמת על ידי חיידק בורדטלה פרטוסיס(Bordetella (Pertussis .
המחלה יכולה להופיע בכל הגילאים אך המעורבות קשה יותר עם תחלואה ותמותה גבוהים במיוחד באוכלוסיית התינוקות שטרם חוסנו כנגד המחלה במיוחד אלה שמתחת לגיל חצי שנה.
החיידק נצמד לדרכי הנשימה ומפריש רעלנים שגורמים לנזק. הנזק המתבטא בהתקפי שיעול קשים וממושכים, הנמשכים שבועות. השיעול הקשה גורם לירידה בריווי החמצן בדם.
בסוף השיעול , מופיע קול אופייני (whooping) בזמן שאיפה דרך דרכי הנשימה החסומות. קיימת נטייה להקיא לאחר השיעול.
בתינוקות צעירים עלולה להיגרם הפסקת נשימה, השתנקות והכחלה, לעיתים ללא התקף השיעול האופייני. 
סיבוכים אפשריים בדרכי הנשימה הם דלקת ראות, אמפיזמה תת עורית וחזה – אויר.
סיבוכים עיקריים נוספים כוללים פרכוסים, אנצפליטיס (בשל חוסר באספקת חמצן למח בזמן השיעול), ודימומים מוחיים. 
במבוגרים עלולים להופיע שברים בצלעות ואבדן שליטה על מתן שתן.
ככל שהתינוק צעיר יותר התחלואה קשה יותר.
